January 2012 Lunch and Learn Series Promotes Accelerated Degree Program

December 7, 2011

Mississippians will soon be making New Year’s resolutions as 2012 approaches. Typically, resolutions deal with plans to lose weight, exercise more, trim TV hours and get a better education.

Mississippi College’s Flowood Center will offer a lecture series in January focusing on resolutions encouraging students in the area to return to school and earn a bachelor’s degree.

MC business professor Sara Kimmel, director of the year-old center in Rankin County, will be the guest lecturer at the new year’s initial Lunch and Learn series beginning on January 13.

“We’ll be talking about the decision to go back to school, what compels individuals to make that choice and what the motivations are,” Kimmel says. She will also look at “what the barriers are and what the solutions to the barriers are.”

The one-hour Friday program at the Flowood Center next-door to the Flowood Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center begins at noon. It’s free and open to the public.

Kimmel’s lecture will be the first in the three-part series that will give area residents loads of information about the Christian university’s Accelerated Degree Program.

The ADP bachelor’s program primarily caters to working adults who often squeeze in time for college studies during evenings on the main MC campus in Clinton and at its Flowood branch.

ADP programs at Mississippi College include accounting, business administration, communication, finance, marketing and sociology.

Kimmel’s second lecture and question/answer session on January 20 will put the spotlight on learning to study. “In this segment, we’ll discuss how to identify learning styles and develop solutions for capitalizing on it,” she said. The program at the Flowood Center begins at noon.

The series concludes on January 27 when Kimmel discusses a third topic - how adult learners can improve their time management skills in 2012.

All three programs are designed for current students and those thinking about coming back to college.
